The Chelsea quagmire ahead of next season

At the end of Roman Abramovich’s time at the club, there was definitely going to be some suffering at the team that was known to splash the cash. It was, however, unexpected that the London side would sink to the current lows. Todd Boehly’s takeover at Chelsea saw the side go on a signing spree, spending extravagantly on seemingly average players, mounting the pressure on them in the name of curating a fresh team.
While at it, the club shoved off the old guard to create space for the ‘new blood’. The expectation was that an array of stars at the team would easily click and keep the club on the same pedestal as their presumed competitors. So far, we can confidently say it all has backfired.
Listed underdogs
It is no longer a surprise seeing Chelsea listed among the underdogs when facing teams that would easily find themselves as weaklings in Chelsea’s good days. The recent defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers was just a case in point where on Sportytrader the Blues were deemed underdogs and you may want to check the website to benefit from sure win football predictions for free.
The loss to Wolves was just one of their eight defeats this season as at Boxing Day and this definitely looks like it will be another tough season for the Blues, now under the management of Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine has seemingly enjoyed more support at the club than his two predecessors, Graham Potter, and club legend Frank Lampard.
The Blues are today a shell of the side that beat Manchester City to the UEFA Champions League title a few years back.
Transfer strategy
Their transfer strategy has not only backfired on the inbound players, most of whom have spent time in the treatment room, with injuries, the players they sent out on loan also present a quagmire for the Chelsea hierarchy. The London side may have gotten top dollar in the sale of top players, among them Mason Mount to Manchester United, Kai Havertz to Arsenal and Matteo Kovacic to Manchester City, their hands were also tied as regards a number of big players, the club having to send them out on loan.
Romelu Lukaku’s is one such situation. The Belgian is doing well in Italy, at AS Roma, but the problem is while Chelsea would want to cash in, they will not be able to get anything close to his signing fee when he rejoined from Inter Milan. The other problem with all this is that Lukaku still has two years to run on his contract with Chelsea and based on how it was at the start of this season, getting to offload him will be a major issue for Chelsea.
